Bellcrest Lending Group, a small-business funding service in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, answers common questions about business funding: whether credit unions lend to businesses, when collateral is required, how equipment financing is recorded, and whether a loan can be paid off early. Partners set every term; these answers describe structures, not offers.
Do credit unions offer business loans?
Yes. Many credit unions make business loans and lines of credit to members. Membership rules come first: they may be based on where you live or work, or on an association. After that, the credit union reviews the same core records any lender would.
Bellcrest sends requests to funding partners and does not represent any particular credit union. The comparison page sets out what each funding type is for.
Can you get a business loan without collateral?
Yes, some business loans are unsecured, meaning no specific asset is pledged. Partners then rely more on cash flow and credit history, and may ask for a personal guarantee. A guarantee is not collateral, but it makes the owner personally responsible.
Read for a blanket lien too: a so-called unsecured offer can still include a general lien on business assets.
Is equipment financing debt?
An equipment loan is debt: the business owes the balance and owns the item. Many leases are recorded as liabilities as well under current accounting standards. Whether a given lease is treated as debt by a future funding partner depends on how it reads your statements.
Ask your accountant how a specific agreement will appear on the balance sheet.
Is equipment financing a capital lease?
A capital lease, called a finance lease under newer accounting standards, is one that transfers most of the benefits and risks of ownership: for example, a bargain purchase option or a term covering most of the item's life. An operating lease behaves more like renting.
The classification is an accounting and tax question; your accountant can tell you which applies to an agreement.
Can you pay back a business loan early?
Often yes. Some agreements allow prepayment without charge; others carry a prepayment fee, or calculate interest so that paying early saves little. Merchant cash advances usually keep the purchased amount fixed. Ask for a written payoff quote before deciding.
If early payoff matters, ask about it before signing, not after.
Does a business loan require collateral?
Not always. Equipment and inventory financing are secured by the goods. Term loans and lines may be secured by business assets, real estate or nothing specific, depending on the partner and the request. Larger amounts and longer terms can come with collateral requirements.
How a request works covers the steps; questions about your own case can go to the contact page.
